FINA tones down 'cancer' remarks
10/06/2009
The International swimming federation FINA has moved to dampen down the ongoing controversy surrounding the construction of top athletes' swimsuits.
After a press briefing to announce the list of approved suits for the 13th FINA World Championships in Rome from
July 18 - August 2, quotes attributed to FINA executive director, Cornel Marculescu, suggested he had referred to the controversy surrounding some of the advanced materials swimsuit manufacturers are using as "a cancer".
FINA has since issued a clarification to specialist swimming media to say that Mr Marculescu's remarks had been mis-translated and that what he meant was that the problem was not one that FINA could solve quickly, "like cutting out a cancer", but instead needed to take time to consider, with information at its disposal from experts in textiles.
The current list of approved suits is valid until December 31. After that, the organisation has made it clear that the rules govering swimsuit technology will become stricter.
