Copper option

German fibre manufacturer smartfiber has launched a new functional fibre, this time combining copper sulphate with lyocell to add to its silver- and algae-based offerings.
The company said on introducing the new fibre, smartcel hygienic, that its most important properties will stem from the fungicidal and antibacterial effects of copper. “This natural element blocks the enzyme system in the metabolism of the microorganisms,” it explained.
It said the new fibre would be useful in fleece fabrics and in any textile application that needed protection against bacteria such as mildew.
