HeiQ brings Barrier to market

HeiQ Materials, a Swiss specialty chemicals company with strong focus on high-performance textile effects, has launched a second product, aimed particularly at the outdoor and sports markets.

Spun off around four years ago from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, HeiQ began to make an impression on the market in 2008 with Pure, an antimicrobial solution based on silver. Radici Fibres and Swiss outdoor brand Mammut were early adopters of the technology, with Mammut reporting a good first season in winter 2009, using it in specialist base-layer garments for winter sports.

Now the company has introduced Barrier, a product that makes textiles and finished garments resistant to liquids and harsh weather. A special surface structure, Barrier prevents water, oil and other stains from staying on the surface of the fabric.

HeiQ said during the launch of the new product at Techtextil 2009 in Frankfurt that it was making it possible for companies using Barrier to reduce by up to 60% the amount of repellency chemicals they might otherwise have used, making this a greener way to add stain-resistance functionality to garments and fabrics.
