US textile and clothing imports fall

Data from the Kolkata intelligence statistics office shows that US textile and clothing imports from four of its top five import destinations have fallen. India’s textile and clothing exports to the US, for example fell 8.2% in dollar terms in April and May compared with the same two-month period last year.

For the period January to April, US imports of Chinese textiles and clothing fell 2.3% from $8.5 billion to $8.3 billion, imports of Indian textiles and clothing dropped 14.1% from $2.1 billion to $1.8 billion, imports from Mexico fell 18.2% from $1.8 billion to $1.5 billion and imports from Indonesia dropped 3.4% from $1.5 billion to $1.4 billion. The one exception was Vietnam, with US textile and clothing imports from the country up 4.5% from $1.5 billion to $1.6 billion.

According to the Kolkata figures, total US textile and clothing imports from across the globe fell 13.9% from $29.9 billion to $25.7 billion during the January to April period.
