Kenyan textile exports to US fall sharply

17/07/2009

According to reports, the steady decline in Kenyan textile exports to the US is continuing to worry manufacturers in the African country. Many believe the US African Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA) has had a massive impact on exports of textile goods to the US over the past six years.

Exports reached a high point in 2003, totalling $272 million, but estimates suggest exports for 2009 will be just $180 million based on sales of $60 million during the first four months of 2009.

The Kenyan Association of Manufacturers (KAM) is appealing to the government to intervene in order to prevent further declines. It believes the expiration of a multi-fibre agreement in 2005, which allowed states to import textile products from other countries to be used in domestically produced textiles has had a real impact on export figures. There has also been a reduction in the number of textile buyers sourcing in Kenya.
