SuperFabric joins forces with d3o

UK-based materials technology company d3o Lab has this year joined forces with US-based protective fabrics firm SuperFabric to produce multi-function motorcycle protectors certified to EN1621-1 standard.

Inventor and maker of the shock absorbing material of the same name, d3o has developed a new material that is softer than the original d3o formulation, 25% lighter, and offers better performance. It then teamed up with SuperFabric to produce a protector that provides both impact protection and advanced abrasion resistance.

SuperFabric takes a base fabric such as nylon or polyester and overlays it with tiny, hard plates in a specific arrangement. The gaps between the guard plates provide flexibility and are small enough to prevent sharp objects from penetrating the fabric. The d3o components can be provided on a SuperFabric panel, which can then be stitched into the motorcycle garment in areas where both impact and abrasion protection is needed.

The solution is also set to be developed for other sports this year.
