Indian textile exports fall

30/07/2009

The Indian Textile Industry Confederation and other textile export promotion councils in India have conducted a study to assess the impact of the economic slowdown on the Indian textile and clothing industry.

According to the minister of state for textiles, Panabaaka Lakshmi, the study showed a decline in textile production and textile exports during the 2008-09 period. He said Indian textile exports fell 5.3% to $18.5 billion between April 2008 and March 2009 from $19.6 billion in the same period a year earlier.

The government introduced two stimulus packages to boost the struggling sector, one on December 7, 2008, and the other on January 2. The budget for 2009-10 also contained several measures to boost the textile industry and textile exports.
