Buyers move in for Canterbury

UK sports retail chain JD Sports has moved to acquire the European division of New Zealand specialist rugby apparel manufacturer Canterbury. The deal, worth £6.5 million, will also give JD Sports global rights to the Canterbury brand.

The European division of Canterbury had been in administration. Reports suggest that an unnamed company is also on the verge of acquiring the brand’s business in New Zealand and Australia for an undiscolsed sum.

The company is the official kit supplier to important international rugby teams, including Australia, South Africa and Scotland. It supplied the New Zealand national team for 75 years, but recently lost the contract to adidas.
