Political leader becomes wool ambassador

The leader of the government of the Australian state of Queensland, Anna Bligh, has agreed to act as the state’s official sheep and wool ambassador.

The wool industry is of great importance in her part of Australia because of the number of people there involved in producing and selling wool and wool garments.

Ms Bligh is also said to have a genuine passion for fine woollen apparel, for evening dress, in business suits and in sports clothing, which she often wears to go running at the start of the day, attracted by the natural breathability, next-to-skin softness, elegant drape and durability of clothing made from Australian merino wool.

To mark the appointment, Australian wool marketing and research and development organisation, Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) has joined forces with AgForce, an organisation representing farmers, to present the Queensland premier with a new set of running apparel, complete with the iconic Woolmark logo.

AWI chief executive, Brenda McGahan, welcomed the opportunity to work closely with Premier Bligh. She said: “It is wonderful to have Premier Bligh as the Queensland sheep and wool ambassador. We look forward to working closely together, particularly in this, the International Year of Natural Fibres.”
