Swimsuit ban hits students immediately
12/08/2009
National Federation of State High School Associations in the US has decided to ban student athletes from wearing high-tech swimsuits with immediate effect.
This mirrors the recent decision by the sport's international governing body, FINA, which has said it will ban a number of recent designs from January 1, 2010.
Some commentators have applauded the decision, saying it will put greater emphasis on the ability of the swimmer.
Swimmers taking part in high school competitions in the US must, from now on, wear suits manufactured from woven fabric that is permeable to water and air and cannot aid buoyancy. Boys suits must not go above the waist or below the top of the knee. Girls suits must not go above the shoulders or below the top of the knee and cannot cover the neck.
