Footballer supports skin cancer charity

Northern Ireland and Sunderland striker David Healy has become the first official patron of a charity set up to raise awareness of the dangers of exposure to the sun and to help fund research into malignant melanoma. The organisation, Factor 50, was set up in Manchester by public relations professional Gillian Nuttall.

She pointed out that skin cancer has claimed some high-profile football figures in recent years, including former Celtic and Scotland midfielder Tommy Burns, Leeds United physiotherapist Ernie Cooksey, and Oldham Athletic player Ernie Cooksey.

At a formal presentation to mark his support for Factor 50, David Healy said:
“Gillian got in touch with me and asked for my help. Being a professional football player, I spend long periods outside in the summer months; it’s easy to forget the dangers of being exposed to the sun. I fully support Factor 50 and their cause to raise awareness of the damage the sun does.”
