The Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association has sent a business delegation to Chile and Argentina for the first time to explore the possibility of expanding business cooperation, Vietnamese media have reported.

During the visit, which took place in mid-August, the delegation visited several garment production and export companies, attended workshops on garment business opportunities between Vietnam and the two host countries and visited a fashion fair in Buenos Aires.

The association's vice chairman Le Van Dao said at the business workshops that garment manufacturing now makes up 10% of Vietnam’s industrial production. Textile exports in 2008 reached $9.13 billion, up 17.8% from the previous year, and made up 15% of the country’s export turnover.

The textile industry is now the second biggest export industry in Vietnam and is expected to become the biggest in 2009, he said. It plans to double its export turnover to US$18 billion in 2015.
