Technical textile plea from Indian minister

24/08/2009

India’s textiles minister, Dayanidhi Maran, is urging the country’s textile manufacturers to turn their attention to producing technical textiles. He believes that, despite the economic slump, demand for technical fabrics is rising rapidly and that Indian textile firms should take advantage of this wherever possible.

Mr Maran expressed this view at a special event hosted by the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA), which was celebrating its 75th anniversary.

According to the minister, the country currently produces just 4% of the technical textiles consumed domestically, forcing it to import the remaining 96%. He believes Indian firms should adapt their production processes in order to improve this percentage.

He added that he had already asked the state-owned National Textiles Corporation to look into setting up of a technical textile plant.
