Unions want World Cup manufacturing sources disclosed
Trade Unions connected to the textile and sportswear industry in South Africa have called on the organisers of the 2010 World Cup and the world football federation, FIFA, to ensure that sportswear made for the tournament are not being made in sweatshops.
Education secretary at the International Textile and Garment Leather Workers’ Federation (ITGLWF), Steve Grinter, has called on the two football bodies to reveal the manufacturing sources of all the shoes and apparel that will be worn at the event.
The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union, SACTWU, has already signed an agreement to say that all producers of FIFA-branded sportswear in South Africa must comply with the collective bargaining agreement for the industry, and that all producers must be members of the clothing industry bargaining council.
