Police destroy textile hemp crop

According to reports, police in the Netherlands have destroyed a field of hemp plants that were to be used to make textiles.

Thinking they had discovered 47,000 illicit cannabis plants, police believed they were destroying a crop worth EUR 4.4 million ($6.3 million), according to the BBC.

However, the plants were being grown in a field in Flevoland province by researchers from Wageningen University, under licence. The researchers were studying this particular hemp variety to see whether it could be used as a potential sustainable source for textiles.
