15/09/2009

According to Bloomberg, the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union has said up to 60,000 textile workers have gone on strike in South Africa today in a bid to increase pay rates.

The labour union is reportedly looking for a 7.9% increase, while employers are currently offering just 5%.

A similar strike took place in August last year, attracting the support of 118,000 members of the South African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union, accounting for around 90% of all textile and clothing workers (see sportstextiles 06.08.09).
