Major textile job losses in Macedonia

28/09/2009

According to its state statistic department, Macedonia's industrial output fell by 9.9% year-on-year in August.

Although this was a slower rate of decline than that registered in July (-20%), many industries have really struggled since the start of the economic downturn. Reports indicate that approximately 20,000 textile and metal workers—the worst hit industries—have already lost their jobs, and there are fears more will go.

However, there are hopes the country will be back on the road to recovery by the end of the year and will achieve modest growth in 2010. It is thought that an improvement in the global economy will have a really positive impact on the textile and metal segments next year.
