South Africa textile strike close to ending
01/10/2009
A strike by textile workers in South Africa appears close to ending.
The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union said in mid-September that up to 60,000 textile workers were taking part in the industrial action in a bid to increase pay rates (see sportstextiles.com, September 15). Local media are now reporting that workers in the clothing industry began to return to their jobs on September 30.
The union's general secretary, Andre Kriel, said a snap survey of 72 out of 92 member companies in the Western Cape showed that average attendance at work was 71% following a proposed settlement to the wage dispute. But he said it would take until October 2 for his organisation to know if enough workers supported the settlement and for it to declare the strike over.
