Chile hopes for hot shirt sales

The Chilean Football Federation has received news that qualification for the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which its team secured on October 14, could earn it as much as $40 million.

The game’s governing body in the South American country believes television rights and advertising could bring in $24 million, while sales of replica shirts should earn it at least $5.45 million.

The last time Chile qualified, for the 1998 competition that took place in France, fans bought 100,000 shirts. A repeat of this, at today’s prices, would bring in the projected amount, which would also be good news for the Chilean national team’s supplier, Brooks Sports. An economist at the Central University of Chile, Javier Latorre, has told local media that shirt sales will be phenomenal; he said some sizes and styles were already sold out.

In addition, each qualifying country receives a payment of $5 million from world governing body FIFA.
