Outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear brand The North Face has announced its commitment to helping halt climate change by actively supporting initiatives called Business for Innovative Climate & Energy Policy (BICEP) and 350.org. The company has challenged outdoor enthusiasts, all consumers and other businesses to do the same.

"The future success of our business is fundamentally linked to having a healthy planet, and we believe that a strong climate change policy is necessary to affect real and meaningful change," said company president, Steve Rendle. "We must all get involved."

The company’s
director of corporate sustainability and communications, Letitia Webster, commented: “Our athletes, consumers and employees are seeing first hand the negative impacts of climate change in their expeditions and everyday lives, with melting glaciers, droughts, decimated forests, and alterations in wildlife habitat. We want to positively influence climate change policies and legislation by leveraging our brand recognition in the marketplace to make a real and lasting impact on our environment."

BICEP works directly with key allies in the business community and with political bodies to support comprehensive energy and climate legislation, while 350.org is an organisation that is striving to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million from the present total of 384. To create awareness of its mission, 350.org called for an International Day of Climate Action on October 24, 2009. The day calls for people around the world to organise an action incorporating the number 350 at an iconic place in their community, and then upload a photo of their event to the 350.org website.
