Australia: two states impose swimsuit ban early

28/10/2009

The Australian states of Victoria and South Australia will ban performance-enhancing non-textile swimsuits from November 1, two months ahead of the global ban that the sport's governing body will impose from January 1.

Australia's main swimming authority has said it will stick to the FINA timetable because it has no competition arranged before the start of 2010. A decision from the state of New South Wales is imminent.

However, swimmers taking part in the Queensland state championships from December 12-18 will still be able to compete wearing controversial swimsuits that add buoyancy by virtue of the materials used in their construction.

FINA is to hold a meeting in Berlin in November to discuss the status of world record times that swimmers from various countries have been able to post thanks, in part at least, to the banned swimsuits.
