Marcel Cerdan collection launches 60 years on

29/10/2009

The grandson of Marcel Cerdan has launched a collection of sports clothing in the style and in the name of France's most famous boxer.

Nicolas Cerdan carried out research on his famous grandfather in the course of setting up a website devoted to him. In the course of this, he read in correspondence between the boxer and singer Edith Piaf that a US sportswear firm had offered Marcel Cerdan a contract in 1948 to produce a line of jackets and jogging pants.

The middleweight champion died a year later and the project never got off the ground.

Working with his wife, Sophie, Nicolas Cerdan has recreated the line and brought the collection to market 60 years on. "We have used natural materials," he explained at the time of the launch, "and the styles of the 1940s. The jackets are heavy and we had to dig out a five-needle sewing machine to make jogging trousers of the kind that were around then."
