Design management award for footwear firm

Barcelona-based sports footwear firm Munich has won a design management award from the Catalan city's chamber of commerce.

The Barcelona chamber of commerce makes a design management award every two years, in association with BCD, a centre that promotes the city as a centre for design. Winners receive up to EUR 6,000 worth of services from the chamber of commerce, which they can use to expand into new markets, for example.

The organisers picked Munich this time, as a joint-winner with a company in the automotive supply sector, because, they said, the footwear firm had "used design to transform itself from a traditional business into a model of success". They also said design was now the basis of Munich's corporate culture and praised the management team for its commitment to design.

"Design has been a strategic factor in allowing the company to make an impact internationally in a mature and difficult market in which competitors are well established," the award organisers concluded. "Investment in design has certainly helped Munich improve its financial performance."
