06/11/2009

Professor Karl-Heinz Umbach has retired from the Hohenstein Institute after working there for 33 years.

Following his physics studies and subsequent doctoral studies in solid state physics, Professor Umbach started out as a scientific assistant at Stuttgart University. He joined the Hohenstein Institute in 1976, assuming management of the clothing physiology area. He has held the function of acting manager since 1993.

As part of his work he refined and supplemented existing clothing physiology-related measuring instruments as well as developing new devices, measurement methods and biophysical calculation models. He also established a systematic construction method for functional clothing in the scientific world through lecturing assignments at the universities of Stuttgart, Kassel and North Carolina State University in the US, as well as within numerous publications and presentations.

Professor Umbach will continue to support the Hohenstein Institute in an advisory capacity, and will work particularly closely with Dr Andreas Schmidt, director of the newly established Function and Care department, as well as the department's scientific manager Dr Jan Beringer.
