Unifi’s Repreve teams up with Blue Avocado
Unifi, which produces Repreve recycled fibres, and Blue Avocado, which makes products to inspire people to reduce their carbon footprint, have teamed up.
The two companies aim to prevent materials from ending up at landfill sites through Blue Avocado’s new reusable gro-pak shopping system. The system is designed to replace 15 plastic bags per shopping trip and features five separate component bags made using Repreve fibres derived from waste and post-consumer plastic (PET) bottles.
According to the two companies, the gro-pak is “durable, compact and stylish, and offers a solution for every shopping need”. Benefits include insulation for hot and cold items, and ventilation for fruit and vegetables.
“Our goal was to provide eco-conscious, time-starved shoppers with a reusable and recycled grocery bag system that’s focused on style, convenience and value,” said Blue Avocado’s chief innovation officer, Melissa Nathan. “The gro-pak system can eliminate 1,000 plastic bags per shopper per year, so the impact of one consumer can affect the lives of many. We believe we’re helping consumers change the way they shop, for good.”
The two firms claim more than 21 billion PET water bottles and 78 billion plastic bags will end up at landfill sites in the US alone this year.
