India’s textile exports fall
According to textiles minister Panabaaka Lakshmi, India’s textile and clothing exports dropped to $20.9 billion in 2008-09 compared with $22.1 billion in 2007-08.
Exports were up slightly compared with $19.2 billion in 2006-07. Moreover, in rupee terms, export value rose 8% to Rs960 billion in 2008-09 compared with Rs891 billion in the previous year.
As a percentage of the country’s total exports, textile and clothing imports fell to 11.5% in 2008-09 from 15.2% in 2006-07 and 13.6% in 2007-08.
