Yarn shortage hits Pakistan

24/11/2009

Having recently struggled with power, wheat and sugar shortages, Pakistan is now experiencing yarn shortages, according to textile minister Rana Farooq Khan.

A meeting took place on November 18 between government representatives—including secretary of the textile ministry Dr Waqar Masood—and local spinners to discuss the problem. Spinners were said to be very concerned about the shortage and the subsequent rise in cotton yarn prices.

After a series of heated discussions, Dr Masood ended the meeting by saying that the government would seek cabinet approval to take legal action against those responsible for “hoarding” cotton yarn.
