ASTM organises virtual textile session
Around 30 textile representatives from Colombia, Sri Lanka, Europe and the US took part in a recent virtual meeting hosted by standards development organisation ASTM International.
According to Jayakumar Gopalakrishnan, ASTM's India textile instructor and technical and service consultant, concerns about sustainable textile manufacturing, what it means and how to determine it, were behind ASTM’s decision to set up the meeting. "The issue of sustainable textile manufacture is being pursued by many persons as well as organisations," he said.
The virtual session provided information about ASTM's work on sustainability standardisation, including an overview of its E60 sustainability committee.
Susan Tinnish, former director of the Convention Industry Council's Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) and ASTM liaison to the group, covered APEX and the role of standards related to greener meetings.
Aditya Goyal, director at Pratibha Syntex, India, spoke on ‘Sustainable Textiles from a Manufacturer's Perspective’, while Martin Bide, professor in the Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design at the University of Rhode Island, spoke on ‘Sustainability: a Holistic Perspective’.
