Zimbabweans encouraged to buy local textiles
The Zimbabwe Textile Workers Union is working hard to encourage local people to support the textile sector by buying domestically produced goods.
The union claims thousands of jobs could be saved if local people are prepared to buy textiles and clothing made in Zimbabwe rather than buying goods imported from other countries. Many people are currently opting to buy cheaper textile items from Asia, but there are fears this could have a devastating effect on the local industry.
The textile union is urging the government to help companies in order to prevent further job losses. One way of doing this, it says, it to implement higher duties on imports so that local textile firms are not priced out of the market. Incentives to help companies upgrade technologies and modernise facilities would also help, the union claims.
