Fake sports goods to benefit homeless

Counterfeit goods valued at more than £1m, seized in the course of this year by customs officials, are to be given as Christmas presents to homeless people in the west of Scotland.

Local politicians in Renfrewshire, south of Glasgow, have decided to give the shoes, clothes and accessories to a local charity, which will remove counterfeit labels (including Lacoste, Nike and adidas) on the goods and replace them with its own logo.

One of the politicians, Marie McGurk, said she welcomed the fact that the items would be put to good use, but said people should bear in mind that counterfeiting is far from a victimless crime. “The proceeds from fake goods often go to organised criminals involved in trafficking drugs, weapons and human beings,” she said.
