Tide turns for Chinese textiles

According to figures from China’s customs department, the country’s total textile and apparel exports in 2009 totalled $167 billion, a drop of 9.8% year-on-year. Textile exports totalled $60 billion, (-8.4%), while apparel exports were $107 billion (-11%).
Despite this, December exports soared. Total textile and apparel exports totalled $16.8 billion, up $2.8 billion, or 20.3%, compared with November exports. Compared with December 2008, exports were up 720 million, or 4.5%. Textile exports rose 25% year-on-year to $6.2 billion, while apparel exports fell 4.8% to $10.6 billion.
