Patagonia pays out $3.8 million in environmental grants
Each year, US-based outdoor brand Patagonia contributes at least 1% of its sales to non-profit organisations working to protect the environment. The tradition goes back to 1973, when a young activist approached the firm with a plan to restore the Ventura River in California. Patagonia decided to give him a grant to help with the work he was doing.
Between May 2008 and April 2009, the company’s environmental grants totalled $3.8 million worldwide. The work carried out by the 400 organisations with which it is involved helps protect endangered species and forests, advocates for clean air, water and food, and works against efforts to lease public lands for further oil and gas exploration.
Going back to 1973, the firm’s total environmental giving in grants and donations exceeds $35 million.
