New snowboard apparel trends at ispo

25/01/2010

According to the organisers of ispo, the snowboarding trends for 2010/11 combine elements of street fashion and technical apparel. This way, the transition from the snow to the street and vice versa is seamless, particularly when it comes to jackets.

Silhouettes have become slimmer and more lightweight, so jackets have more prominent waistlines and trousers are cut narrower and tighter. The trends are reminiscent of the 1980s, although flashy elements are muted by moderated cuts and warm colours such as violet, orange, lapis lazuli blue, carmine red, turquoise, lava red, chocolate brown and raven black. Herringbone, tweed and pinstripe continue to be popular.

Natural materials are beginning to regain their foothold for snowboard apparel. In particular, the technical underwear segment is using materials such as silk, wool, cotton and bamboo, and the outerwear segment is increasingly following in its footsteps. Germany-based mountain sports company Ortovox, for example, is presenting its first complete collection made from Merino wool at the upcoming edition of ispo (February 7-10).

Small details will be important in the new collections for 2010/11 including fabric-covered buttons, muted logo zips, rhinestones, metal logos and colourful lining materials. Pockets for iPods have become the norm, and companies are now working on the next step for example adjustable hoods that can be used over helmets.

Protection in the form of helmets and within garments themselves is important, and must be incorporated without inhibiting movement and affecting comfort levels.
