Reaching the top with 66°North
Iceland-based outdoor clothing company 66°North and Icelandic Mountain Guides (IMG) are joining forces for the third consecutive year this year to offer the ‘Reach the Top with 66°North’ training programme. This programme gives participants the opportunity to reach the summit of Europe’s biggest glacier, Hvannadalshnukur in the north-western rim of the country’s Öræfajökull volcano. At 2,110 metres high, it is the highest point on the island.
The training consists of two parts: lectures and workshops educating participants about nutrition, clothing, equipment, safety and environmental responsibility; and 14 climbs designed to build knowledge, confidence, fitness and experience before attempting Hvannadalshnukur.
Training begins on February 3 and finishes at the end of May with the first of two ascents of Hvannadalshnukur. Last year around 210 people reached the peak.
IMG has years of experience in mountain guiding and safety while 66°North develops technical outdoor clothing to support mountain climbers in harsh conditions.
