US athletic shoe prices rise

Preliminary figures from the National Sporting Goods Association have revealed that the cost of a pair of athletic shoes rose 3% on average in 2009 to $45.04 compared with $43.71 in 2008.
The study showed that men tended to spend more on athletic footwear than women. On average, men paid $46.39 per pair in 2009 compared with $45.16 in 2008, while women paid $44.02 compared with $42.75 the previous year.
The highest spending age group was the 14- to 17-year-old bracket, with younger buyers paying an average of $54.66 for a pair of athletic shoes. Following them were the 18- to 24-year-olds, who spent an average of $53.72 and the 25- to 34-year-olds, who spent an average of $53.59.
