US consumers bought almost a billion pairs of sports shoes

The former president of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America, Peter Mangione, has said that 45% of shoe sales in the US in 2009 were athletic shoes.

“Athletic shoes are still by far the most important category in the US footwear market,” Mr Magione, now managing director of a consultancy company called Global Footwear Partnerships, said during a presentation at the 2010 India International Leather Fair in Chennai on February 1.

He estimated that consumers in the US bought around 990 million pairs of athletic shoes last year.
