India confident of higher cotton exports

The state-owned Cotton Corporation of India has reported that the country’s cotton crop in 2009–10 is 20.05 million bales of 170 kg each, down from 20.80 million bales during the same period last year.
The cotton year runs between October and September.
The crop rose by 28% to 6.8 million bales in the state of Gujarat, while it fell by 24% to 4 million bales in neighbouring Maharashtra. The two western states are the country’s biggest producers of cotton.
India’s cotton exports in the first four months of 2009–10 increased by 245% to 2.79 million bales, according to official data from the ministry of textiles. Textile commissioner and chairman of Cotton Advisory Board (CAB), A.B. Joshi said he expected cotton exports for the full-year period to be 57% higher than 12 months ago at 5.5 million bales.
