Organic cotton stocks up 20%

18/02/2010

Production of organic cotton across the world increased by one-fifth last year, with all producing countries harvesting a combined 175,113 tonnes. The amount of land farmers dedicated to organic cotton crops in 2009 was over 250,000 hectares. The figures come from a report compiled by the Organic Exchange.

The non-governmental organisation, which seeks to promote the production and use of organic crops in textile and food supply chains across the world, said that, in spite of the 20% increase, organic cotton still accounted for less than 1% of total cotton production globally. Its share currently stands at 0.76%.

In all, 22 countries produce organic cotton crops, with India, Turkey and Syria the leaders. The Organic Exchange estimates the number of farmers involved in the fibre’s production at 220,000 worldwide.

Surprisingly, the organisation added that, by February 2010, not all of the 2009 stock of organic cotton had been bought.
