French yachtsman Corentin de Chatelperron has set out on an ambition voyage to sail home to France from Bangladesh in a craft whose construction is 40% jute.
Mr de Chatelperron has said he wants to promote the natural fibre in the face of what he called intense competition from synthetic alternatives in recent years.
Jute was Bangladesh’s main export item in the 1990s, supporting millions of farmers and factory workers. Last year the Asian country’s exports of the the fibre and finished goods made from it had a value of around 400 million dollars, making it the third-most important export product behind garments and frozen food.
