China wants a stronger sports industry

China’s State Council, the country’s chief administrative authority, has passed a new sports industry policy to urge the development of the sports industry and activities, local media have reported.

Reports said that China’s sports industry currently accounts for less than one percent of its gross domestic product. The government estimates this to be a tenth of the proportion of GDP that many western countries spend on sport and the outdoors, leaving great potential for future growth of the industry as Chinese consumers become more affluent.

A vice-president of one sportswear company, Zhang Tao, was quoted as saying: “I am upbeat about the domestic sports industry. The sales of sports clothing totalled $1.3 billion last year. Research shows the growth rate of the sports industry is expected to be no less than 15% this year.”
