Cotton shortfall in Pakistan
26/02/2010
Pakistan's minister for textiles, Rana Farooq Saeed, has announced that the country's cotton production for the year is 13 million bales, two million bales short of Pakistan's own cotton demands. Production last year was 11 million bales.
The minister said the government had reacted to the situation by removing duties on imports of cotton and setting up a registration scheme for cotton exporters. He said Pakistan remained the fourth-largest producer of cotton in the world.
