APTMA initiates strike action

18/03/2010

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has taken strike action against a government decision to cut the export quota from 50 million kilogrammes of yarn per month to 35 million kilogrammes.

The association started its strike action on March 18 and was joined by around 350 yarn manufacturing factories from across Pakistan. As a result, most of the country’s textile units are shut for the day, which is expected to lead to a loss of approximately $15 million.

Yarn producers feel the textile ministry is biased toward the value-added textile sector and believe they are being unfairly treated. However, the government says it expects the situation to be resolved amicably through negotiations. It also points out the quota has been reduced because non-cotton yarn was not included in the original quota.
