Anti-athlete’s foot sock in development following new research
According to the Institute for Hygiene and Biotechnology at the Hohenstein Institute in Boennigheim, Germany, millions of people suffer from athlete’s foot. As a result, it decided to carry out some research about the condition and is now developing an anti-athlete’s foot sock.
While it is well documented that the condition can be passed on in areas such as swimming pools, the institute claims little has been done to assess the risk posed when garments come into contact with one another.
It found that when contaminated articles of clothing are stored with other pieces of clothing, fungus spores can be transferred from one textile to another. Furthermore, lower washing temperatures in domestic washing machines do not guarantee the effective removal of skin fungi. It found that only laundry washed at 60°C was clear of any verifiable fungus spores.
The study showed that people suffering from athlete’s foot should always store their socks separately from other textiles.
