Textiles one of Hong Kong’s “pillar” industries
Hong Kong’s secretary for commerce and economic development, Rita Lau, made it clear how important the textile and clothing industry is to the economy at Prime Source Forum (March 29-31).
“The textile and clothing industry has been one of Hong Kong's pillar industries,” Mrs Lau says. “In 2009, our total exports of textiles and clothing products reached nearly US$32 billion, accounting for almost 12% and 10% of our domestic exports and re-exports respectively. What is more, Hong Kong provides vivid examples of the evolution of the industry in action.”
Mrs Lau points out that less than 40 years ago, Hong Kong’s textile segment was a very low-value-added sector. “Today, Hong Kong has become a most essential supply chain management hub and innovation centre for textiles and clothing products in the world,” she claims. “I am optimistic about the future of our textile and clothing industry. Our strengths in combining creativity with technical excellence, coupled with our business-friendly environment and proximity to the mainland market are all contributing factors for our future growth.”
