Sports retail chain welcomes Olympics boost

Canada’s largest sporting goods retail chain, the Forzani Group, has said its sales in the first two months of 2010 increased by 14.5% compared to the same period last year.

The Calgary-based retail group received a big boost from Canada’s wins in the men’s and women’s ice hockey tournaments at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. It holds a licence to sell official national team hockey apparel.

“The Olympics were very good for us,” said chief executive, Bob Sartor, during a conference call with analysts to discuss Forzani’s financial results.

He added that the company also hoped to capitalise on sales linked to the Stanley Cup (the play-offs for the National Hockey League) and to the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa in June and July. “We plan to be World Cup central,” Mr Sartor said.

Forzani has 558 stores across Canada under several banners, including Sport Chek, Sport Mart, Athletes World, Nevada Bob’s and Intersport.
