Swimwear brand Speedo will donate 35,000 items of swimwear to combat malaria.

The UK-based company has pledged to support an event called the World Swim Against Malaria, taking place on June 25, by donating 35,000 items of swimwear to participants.

The event, organised by Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), will have participants from all over the world taking to the water to raise awareness of malaria, one of the world’s biggest killers. First held in 2005 with 250,000 swimmers taking part, this year’s World Swim Against Malaria is aiming to attract one million participants.

The swimming event started in 2005 and has, so far, raised more than $2 million, which has provided almost half a million mosquito nets, protecting almost 1 million people from malaria.

Speedo has announced that sponsors who dontate more than $5 this year will be able to claim free swimwear items; online donations at www.worldswimagainstmalaria.com/speedo are possible. Each sponsor will be able to claim up to four swimwear items depending on how much they donate. They will only have to pay for postage and packaging.

Speedo international’s president, David Robinson said on announcing the initiative: “Speedo is delighted to support the World Swim Against Malaria. Speedo employees and their friends and families from all around will be taking part on June 25, and we hope that, in donating 35,000 items of swimwear, we will be able to encourage many more people to join us. We feel it is only right to offer our full support to AMF in this most worthy of endeavours to reach the target of one million swimmers.”
