African nations to support textile sector

04/05/2010

Textile companies across Africa is hoping the newly launched African Cotton Industries Federation (ACTIF) will give the industry a much-needed boost.

Twenty-three trade associations from 18 African countries launched the federation in Nairobi, Kenya. According to The East African newspaper, its initial focus will be on problems associated with production, processing and marketing.

Africa currently produces 12% of the world’s cotton but more than 95% is sold on before it is processed. The ACTIF hopes to change this so that more value is added to the product before it is exported.
