New tax for textile workers in Swaziland

10/05/2010

Employees working in the textile industry in Swaziland will now have 3% their salary deducted for tax. Previously, employees within the textile and apparel sector were exempt from paying the tax because they fell within a low income bracket.

However, secretary general of the Swaziland Manufacturing and Allied Workers Union (SMAWU), Sipho Manana, claims textile workers will now have to pay the tax from July despite the fact their wages will stay the same. Mr Manana says workers will be severely impacted by the tax as many struggle to make ends meet as things stand.
