Icebreaker could open 50 new stores around the world

Founder and chief executive of specialist New Zealand merino wool outdoor clothing brand Icebreak, Jeremy Moon, has told The Financial Times that his company is preparing for an ambitious global expansion.

He told the newspaper he hopes to open as many as 50 stores internationally in the next five years, starting with New York in September. The company already has one store in the US, in Woodburn, Oregon.

Mr Moon has been personally involved in trying to find the best location for a new Icebreaker store in New York, and has worked with his team to present merino-based fabrics and products to consumers there. He said: “It’s wool, so people expect it to be the enemy, to be itchy. But when they touch it, they discover it’s like silk.”

The company supplies 3,000 shops in 30 countries but only has three branded stores at the moment: outlets in Auckland and Montreal, as well as the one in Woodburn.
