Giro d’Italia victory for Ivan Basso and Outwet

Italian cyclist Ivan Basso won the Giro d’Italia last week wearing Outwet underwear made from 100% Dryarn.

Having dominated and won the Giro d'Italia in 2006, the cyclist from Gallarate took first place in what was a difficult and exciting competition.

The event took place on May 8-30 and started in Amsterdam. Cyclists taking part endured climbs such as Monte Zoncolan, Plan de Corones and the Gavia Pass before ending in Verona with an individual time trial.

The tournament was also a success for sports textiles manufacturer Outwet, which has been the official Liquigas team sponsor since 2009 and provides technical underwear for all members of the team, both for training and competition.

The underwear garments are made using Aquafil’s Dryarn, believed to be the lightest microfibre in the world. According to Aquafil, the microfibre is better than wool in terms of insulation and better than cotton because it allows water, humidity and sweat to be transported to the outside of the fabric. This helps to reduce the proliferation of bacteria and the formation of odours.

"It was a really tough Giro and I think the victory is that much greater [than the first] because it was such a spectacular race," Mr Basso said.
